The resource includes a collection of reports from a number of universities in England in which they evaluate the impact of their programmes of masters and doctoral level programmes for schoolteachers. Compiling such reports is a condition of funding. Some of the history and key features of this particular programme of postgraduate professional development (PPD) will be outlined in a separate paper in which I will also attempt to set out what I believe to be key factors affecting it. I do not possess an exhaustive knowledge of what lies behind each of the reports. As external examiner and member of validation panels for some of the programmes and having contributed to a number of the impact evaluation reports I am, however, aware of the considerable hinterland of research and reflection upon practice that they can represent. I am also interested in establishing a set of principles against which we may critique national and international systems for the examination and evaluation of the impact of programmes of professional learning; and in developing a framework for their examination and evaluation. If we can agree on these they have the potential to develop into an international language for professional learning that we can use in order to make sense of and disseminate what we learn.
